Adjustable steep angle neck for Yamaha YCL-221II bass clarinets
Please note: This neck is only compatible with the YCL-221II bass clarinet, It will NOT fit on the YCL-220 or the professional models. Also note that while I size the tenon to fit my new-ish instrument, you may have to have a tech resize the tenon to fit your particular instrument like with any other neck you purchase. Most of the time this should not be an issue, but it is something you should keep in mind. If you are local to the Hartford CT area I am happy to provide this service free of charge.
The Yamaha YCL-221II is one of my favorite student level bass clarinets. That being said it is not without it’s fair share of unusual design choices. My two biggest gripes with the instrument are 1) how far you have to pull out the neck to play in tune at A=440Hz and 2) the angle of the neck. This neck aims to solve both of those problems while also improving response.
This neck features a tuning slide that provides 10mm of adjustability, giving you a much greater degree of flexibility. Two mouthpiece angles are available, 40° (Similar to older Selmers and Royals) and 50° (Similar to the Privilege and Prestige). Compared to the stock angle of 30°, both of these angles offer advantages for intermediate to advanced players. My personal preference is 50°, but if you play standing you may want the 40° option.
This neck is made from a composite material chosen for its superior resonance compared to metal. The tuning slide is made from durable carbon fiber and the body tenon is made from copper, which unlike brass is completely immune from red rot.
