Looking for a good mouthpiece for your small bore basset horn? While Selmer and older Buffet basset horns are designed to use a standard Bb mouthpiece, they can often be stuffy with many mouthpieces. The JDWoodwinds small bore basset horn mouthpiece by comparison features an optimally sized German inspired facing with a 1.15mm tip opening paired with an extra long facing. This facing provides excellent response across the entire range of the instrument with a full and resonant low C. Best of all this facing still allows you to use harder reeds, my personal preference is a Vandoren 56 Rue Lepic in strength 3.5. This mouthpiece also features “H-shaped” chamber walls and a baffle with a scoop to provide a focused and dark tone. Finally the bore is tapered to better match the larger bore compared to Bb/A clarinets.
