F Mezzo/Conn-O-Sax fit mouthpiece

from $125.00

The JDwoodwinds F mezzo mouthpiece is the closest thing you will find to an original mouthpiece on the market. After speaking with quite a few F mezzo/Conn-O-Sax players, the consensus was that while modern style mouthpieces can offer some advantages, the original mouthpieces offer the best tone. This is because the original mouthpieces have a large round chamber with no rollover in the baffle whatsoever, which is what these instruments are designed to use. Because of this, I felt that starting with a modern alto or soprano mouthpiece to make an F mezzo mouthpiece would not be the right approach. After years of searching I found the holy grail of sax mouthpieces, an original F mezzo mouthpiece that showed little to no signs of use. I used this mouthpiece to take measurements and make my own version that was as close to the original design as possible. The JDwoodwinds F mezzo mouthpiece features the same 1.3mm tip and 17mm facing length as the original. Custom facings are available on request as well but only on the black plastic version. A clarinet ligature can be used on F mezzo mouthpieces, however I’ve also designed a ligature specifically to fit this mouthpiece. For reeds, alto clarinet reeds seem to work the best as they are slightly narrower that alto sax reeds but alto sax reeds will also work.

2 versions of this mouthpiece are available. The black plastic version (first picture) is made with my standard plastic material (denser than hard rubber and the typical plastics used to make student mouthpieces) and is hand faced. The white resin version (second and third pictures on the right) is made from bio-compatible resin and has more internal finishing to be even closer to the original.

All of my mouthpieces are made from an FDA approved material and can easily be washed with soap and warm water to remove germs. As with any woodwind mouthpiece, it is recommended to clean your mouthpiece (and reed) after each play session to help your equipment last as long as possible and prevent the build up of germs.
