Yamaha YCL 221ii bass clarinet, freshly serviced! 2 piece adjustable neck + pro mouthpiece
Looking for a great student bass clarinet for an affordable price? The Yamaha YCL-221ii has proven to be a popular horn with both students and casual players alike. Unlike many other student bass clarinets it comes apart at the middle joint and fits in a case roughly the size of an alto sax case. This particular instrument also comes with an upgraded steep angle two piece adjustable neck. Not only does this make it significantly easier to play while seated, but it also allows you to play comfortably at A=440Hz without pulling out significantly at the neck tenon. This instrument also comes with a brand new JDwoodwinds bass clarinet mouthpiece which plays beautifully with this instrument. This bass clarinet has just been serviced and plays very well from low Eb up to the altissimo with an even and resonant tone. All pads are in great condition and the tenon cork and o-rings have just been replaced. The keys have also been oiled and adjusted and the register key pad has been replaced with a cork pad to improve the reliability of the register mechanism. The nickel plating is in great condition with minimal wear. The instrument does show light dings and scratches from careful use as expected. Unfortunately like many of these bass clarinets the center tenon snapped at some point which also cause some small cracks to propagate into the upper joint. The tenon was replaced previously but I redid the work to make it significantly stronger. First I filled the cracks with cyanoacrylate and installed several carbon fiber pins though the cracks to strengthen the area. Next I made a custom tenon from a carbon fiber material that is significantly less brittle than the stock tenon and installed it using high strength epoxy. I’ve included a photo of the repaired cracks. The new tenon is nice and solid and fits well in the lower joint. I am confident that this repair will be reliable for the life of the instrument, that being said I have priced the instrument significantly lower than comparable examples with the original tenon and I am including the extra neck and mouthpiece free of charge so this is an excellent value for anyone needing a great bass clarinet for an affordable price.
