The JDwoodwinds Bb piccolo clarinet is the smallest and highest pitch production clarinet in the world! Pitched in Bb it is much more useful in many circumstances than the Ab piccolo clarinet. This may look like a toy but in fact it is a fully chromatic high quality instrument that is the ultimate tool for musicians looking to experiment with the upper end of the reed instrument family. Compared to other ultra high reed instruments like the piccolo (sopranissimo) saxophone is it significantly more in tune throughout the range without voicing and has both a higher upper range and a lower bottom range. The included hand faced mouthpiece is designed to be free blowing and responsive and is designed to use standard Ab clarinet reeds. This clarinet features the most advanced set of key work ever fitted to a Bb piccolo clarinet! If you’ve ever tried to play an Ab piccolo clarinet you know how difficult it is. That’s why I went with a simplified key system to give your fingers more room meaning you aren’t constantly hitting keys accidentally. The instrument features simplified Boehm system key work. Other than having to have the right pinky closed for F#/C# and E/B the fingerings are identical to standard Boehm fingerings without additional alternate fingerings. With a bit of practice you can get proficient with this system and play complex literature.
This clarinet is designed to be repairable and reliable for a life time of use with proper maintenance. This clarinet features a synthetic body paired with 2x thickness silver plated brass key work. Key work is very thick to resist damage and is made in a pin and block style like many high end Irish flutes. Springs are rust resistant phosphor bronze secured with stainless steel screws plus 2 coil springs for A and Ab giving a nice light action for those tiny keys. Axles are stainless steel and can be removed by your tech with brass jawed pliers and a small punch. Pads are Italian made by a company used by many major clarinet manufacturers and can be replaced just like any other clarinet pad. Pads have also been treated with three coats of lacquer which will make the leather more water resistant as well as soft and strong for many years to come.
A good clarinet needs good accessories, and this clarinet doesn’t disappoint. Each clarinet will come with a custom Reed & Squeak case, Rovner Ligature, Vandoren #4 reed and a Hodge swab. Extra mouthpieces are available here.
