sold out

Looking for an affordable French made wooden A clarinet? For sale we have a vintage Couesnon stencil originally sold by Carl Fischer. This clarinet has some unique features that you don’t normally see, the most obvious being a rosewood bell! In addition to this it has a “wraparound register key” which is designed to prevent moisture from clogging the tube and a 7th ring which provides and alternate Eb fingering in the lower register. This clarinet has been fully serviced and is in excellent playing condition. To start off, both body joints were fully stripped, cleaned and oiled. The keys were also fully stripped and polished and the rods and screws were cleaned to remove grime. All pads and corks were then fully replaced, for this clarinet I used leather pads for the ring keys and synthetic low noise pads for the rest of the instrument. This combination give the nice firm feel of leather pads where it’s most easily noticed while reducing noise and providing moisture resistance where it is needed most. Tone holes were also leveled as needed to get a good seal with the pad. Finally the instrument was reassembled, oiled, adjusted and the mechanism was tightened as needed to ensure a smooth action and good response throughout. Both joints have an excellent “tight as a Coke bottle” seal and, thanks to the synthetic pads, with regular service it should remain in good playing condition for many years to come. The lower joint, bell and barrel are free of cracks but the upper joint does have a ~2-3” repaired crack. The good news is that it did not run through any tone holes and is not leaking any air. The crack was reinforced with both 5 pins and a hard rubber sleeve over the upper tenon. The repair was actually done so well that it’s very difficult to tell that there was ever a crack there in the first place. I am confident it will not be an issue so I am offering a 1 year crack warranty. If it opens up again send it back and I will repair it free of charge. Because of the crack I have priced this instrument accordingly. Other than that the instrument does show normal wear including scratches, dents and dings, most notably there are some scratches at the middle joint from a lyre holder. When testing the instrument I found myself playing a bit sharp, so I ended up making a custom rosewood composite barrel to match the instrument. With the new barrel the intonation is pretty decent with only some expected flatness in the lower chalumeau and sharpness in the upper clarion. This would be an excellent first A clarinet for a college student or pro on a budget. Comes with a non original single case, though presumably you will want to purchase your own double case. Not sure if you’ll like it? I offer a 10 day no questions asked return policy, see the details here.
