Buffet Crampon professional wooden bass clarinet, serviced and rerady to play!
Looking for an affordable professional bass clarinet? For sale we have a 1948 Buffet professional low Eb bass clarinet in good playing condition. This bass clarinet is from the same era as those used by legends such as Dennis Smylie and Eric Dolphy (yes believe it or not he played a Buffet in addition to the Selmer model 30!). These bass clarinets feature a 23.3mm bore in the body, the same as the current Tosca! It also features a left hand Ab/Eb, fully automatic double register vent mechanism and a floor peg. This particular horn also has an upgraded neck with silver plating, a tuning slide and a steeper mouthpiece angle! This bass clarinet has just been serviced and as plays very well from top to bottom. The previous owner had this instrument repadded by another tech and all of the pads are still in good condition with the large majority looking almost new. Tenon and key corks are also in good condition. I’ve gone through and raised pad heights where needed to improve response and intonation as well as performed general service and repairs. Unfortunately this instrument did have 2 hairline cracks, one near the register key and one in the middle socket. Fortunately both of these cracks have been professionally repaired and neither affect playability whatsoever. Both are also almost invisible after the repair. The one on the upper joint was only ~1mm deep and did not go through to the bore or any tone holes. The one in the socket did go into the C/G tone hole but has been fully sealed. It’s very common for bass clarinets to crack in this location due to a loose socket ring, the socket ring has since been tightened to help ensure it will not open up again. Other than that the instrument does show normal dents, dings and scratches as to be expected with a vintage horn. Because of these repaired cracks I have priced this instrument significantly below what other Buffets are selling for, so if you want a cheap professional bass clarinet it doesn’t get much better than this! Comes with a brand new JDwoodwinds bass clarinet mouthpiece which plays particularly well with this horn. Also comes with an original Buffet case which is unfortunately fairly beat up but still protects the instrument. If you would like, I have a nice ProTec 1 piece case I can include instead for an extra $100.
